CHAPTER 6

HALEY

Iwas sitting in the office the next morning trying to focus on what needed to be done, but my mind kept going back to last night. I never intended for any of this to happen and now that it had, I felt like crap. The very last thing I wanted was to bring this drama to Derek’s doorstep. I had no idea what I was supposed to do or what the game plan was. Derek didn’t cover that with me. He was up earlier than I was this morning, needing to get the horses organized for the new stable build. He left a note letting me know that he was out on the farm and would be at the office later to speak with me about the adoption day. I still couldn’t believe that I was not going to need to run this time. Part of me was excited at the prospect of being able to stay, and the other part of me was terrified at what could happen to the men or animals here. I didn’t want any of them hurt or triggered with everything that was going on. Derek seemed confident that they could handle it. I was just hoping that was the case.

The door opening had my heart fluttering that Derek was coming in, but it sank when I saw that it was Clay with Roxy not far behind him. I had never been nervous around Clay before, but I found myself slightly unsure of being around him. I could see something in his eyes that I had never seen before, anger. I just didn’t know if he was angry with me or the situation. Clay came around the desk and sat down in one of the chairs we had back there. I could see a slight flash of pain in his eyes. I knew he was still struggling with his prosthetic and the pain from his injuries. I wanted to ask if he was okay, but I learned within the very first day of working here that only Derek was allowed to ask him that.

“I’m sorry about last night, about everything that I brought to your door,” I said.

“You didn’t bring it to our door. He did. You don’t have anything to apologize for. The guys and us have the situation under control. Reed already found everything we need to know on Damien and with the right motivation, we can get him to make a fatal mistake. Guys like him are easy for guys like us. It’s not why I’m here.”

I couldn’t help but be shocked. Not by his words, but how many he spoke. For the past month Clay had maybe said five words to me. Every time I said hello, he would give me a nod. Clay was a man of few words, especially if you weren’t Derek addressing him.

“Why are you here? Babysitting duty?” I tried to joke, but it honestly wouldn’t surprise me.

“The only person I babysit is my sister.”

“You have a sister?”

“I do, Mylie.
